The truths I saw in the mirror

I was always reflecting why women like mirrors ad why whenever people have an occasion to look at the mirror do so, regardless whether they’re passing by the display mirrors in shopping centre, the front glass of the buildings, mirrors in elevators or public bathrooms. I realised that there is something special about the fact that only in the mirrors  we are able to see ourselves in full shape. Seeing yourself with your eyes. Sounds too obvious? Not really.

Have you ever wondered why the human being is construed in such a way  that we cannot perceive ourselves in full shape. We cannot see our facial mimics when we speak, cannot see our reactions when we talk to other people, we cannot see how our body is behaving from a a distant perspective. Mirrors give this opportunity, they’re so tempting to look at in most awkward moments when we’re in the shopping passage or simply rushing somewhere.  I believe however, that mirrors have one more special quality.

Since they are the optimal reflection of a current shape of our body, they also reveal certain truths about ourselves.  When we are in the daily rush, we do not tend to even think about it, we perform certain things automatically. Have you ever stopped, looked at the reflection of a person standing on the other side of the mirror and wondered : who is this?

Have you spotted that children do so? Very often, when  a small child is first being ‘introduced’ to see themselves in the mirror, their reaction is followed by a surprise and awakens their curiosity. They usually try to touch the glass and are astonished of what they see there – is the person on the other side real, does it move? There is something fascinating about this image of ourselves we are introduced to.  Another fascinating remark is, that this image changes over years.  As the time flies, our perception of who we really are and what is our worth fluctuates.

I had an evening shift at work today and when I was washing my hands in the bathroom, I automatically looked at the person I saw in the mirror. My thoughts were wandering somewhere before and I was not even focused on what was I doing, up until the moment I looked at myself again. And I saw her. I moved my glasses on top of my head and I saw her face, a bit tired and dull after the whole day… It was also in this instant time lap that I noticed a woman of strength and power, a person who is not afraid of hard work and challenges ahead. I saw a person who is willing to become even more mature than she is now and a person of great worth to the world.

However cocky it sounds, it was today that I came to realise and see my worth and value as a woman. In the bathroom and  in front of the mirror. I hope that every day more women will come to see their true potential and worth to the world.
